What this calculates
This counts the drywall sheets a room needs and estimates the fasteners and finishing materials that go with them. It deliberately does not subtract door and window openings. That is not an oversight — on a normal room those cut-outs produce offcuts too small to use elsewhere, so the sheet still gets consumed. Subtracting openings from the area is how people end up one sheet short on hanging day, which is a particularly annoying way to lose an afternoon.
How it works
Wall area is the perimeter times the height. If the ceiling is being hung too, its area — length times width — is added. The waste allowance is applied to that total, and the result is divided by the area of one sheet: 32 square feet for a 4 by 8, 40 for a 4 by 10, 48 for a 4 by 12. Everything else follows from the sheet count using standard trade ratios: roughly 32 screws per sheet at 16 inch stud spacing, about 40 feet of joint tape per sheet, and around half a gallon of compound per sheet for a three-coat finish.
Worked example
A 14 by 12 foot room with 8 foot walls, ceiling included, using 4 by 8 sheets. Walls: 2 × (14 + 12) × 8 = 416 square feet. Ceiling: 14 × 12 = 168. Total 584 square feet. Add 10% waste to get 642, divide by 32 and you need 21 sheets. That works out to about 672 screws, 840 feet of tape and 11 gallons of compound — buy compound in the largest bucket available, it is much cheaper that way.
Common mistakes
Subtracting window and door openings is the main one, for the reason above. Second is choosing 12 foot sheets because the maths is more efficient, without considering whether two people can actually carry one up a staircase — they are about 95 pounds and unwieldy. Third is under-buying compound: a three-coat finish uses far more than people expect, and running out between coats leaves visible ridges where the work stopped.

- How many screws per sheet of drywall?
- About 32 for a 4 by 8 sheet on studs 16 inches on centre — roughly every 12 inches in the field and every 8 inches on the edges. Ceilings take more, since gravity is working against you.
- Should I hang drywall horizontally or vertically?
- Horizontally on most residential walls. It puts the butt joints at a comfortable working height and produces less total joint length to tape, which is the slow part of the job.
